Piper awoke in Juan’s arms. She took in a breath and sank into his warmth and that scent that belonged only to him. His strong body fitted so perfectly to hers. She reveled in the smooth touch of skin against skin.

A loud knock on the door made her flinch. She got up, wrapped her flannel robe about her, and tied off the waist. Taking care to close the bedroom door behind her, she went to the door, grumbling, “Don’t people know that I’m unemployed and sleep in in the mornings?”

“Good morning!” Avery’s sometimes-too-cheerful smile greeted her. “I’ve weathered the storm and am now here to take you to breakfast.”

“Why?”

Avery looked at Piper as though she’d lost it. “Because we had plans? Ugh, you forgot.” She turned her head, rolling her eyes, but stopped at the sight of Juan’s jacket on the hook by the door. Suddenly suspicious, she said, “That looks familiar.”

She turned to Piper and lifted an eyebrow, then she walked toward the fireplace and stared at the two whiskey glasses and the size-twelve shoes by the sofa. Slowly, she turned back to Piper, this time with both eyebrows lifted and an all-too-knowing tilt of the head.

Piper’s mouth opened to offer an explanation. She just had to think of one. Then the master-suite shower turned on.

“Okay. I’m gonna go out on a limb and suggest you’ve got company now.”

Piper nodded.

“Some guy with a jacket that looks remarkably like Juan’s. What’re the odds?”

Piper offered a guilty smile.

By now, Avery was beaming. She dragged Piper to the counter. “Sit down. Tell me everything. Hurry! Before he finishes his shower.”

“No, not now. It’s too new. Give us time to figure out what it is.”

Avery smirked. “‘What it is?’” She gave her head a slow shake and then pointed a finger first toward the bedroom and then at Piper. “What that is, is sex. And what this is, is you being crazy in love.” She slammed her palms on the counter. “Oh my gosh, Piper, what happened?”

“What’s going to happen is you’re going to leave before he comes out and things get awkward. We’re not ready for awkward. Not yet.”

Avery couldn’t seem to stop smiling. “Okay, okay. I’m outta here. Oh, Piper!” She gave her a hug. “We’ll talk later.”

Piper laughed. “Okay, sure.”

Avery pointed a finger at Piper. “Oh, yes. We’ve got quite a talk in our future. And don’t forget, you owe me a breakfast.”

Just as they reached the door, Juan emerged from the bedroom with a towel wrapped around his waist. Seeing Avery, he stopped at the threshold.

“Morning, Juan. Good to see you!” She turned and practically sang, “See you soon, Piper.”

She was gone before Juan got a word out.

Piper retrieved the two coffees from the kitchen counter. “In twenty minutes, the whole town will know.”

Juan smiled as he took both coffees and set them back down. “That saves me the trouble of taking out that full-page ad I was planning.” He grinned as he slid his hand down her arm and grasped her hand to lead her back into the bedroom.
